Preserving Paradise: Our Sustainability Commitment
In the Maldives, where environmental challenges are pressing, our commitment to sustainability goes beyond trends – it’s a necessity to ensure the long-term health of our island, its marine life and the well-being of our community. Deeply committed to preserving our tropical paradise through a holistic approach to sustainability, we have implemented a range of initiatives to minimise environmental impact and reduce the footprint we leave behind. Join us on our journey towards a more sustainable tomorrow.
Underwater
Coral Restoration – Long-term Biodiversity Project
Our flagship conservation initiative, the Holistic Approach to Reef Protection (HARP), is dedicated to restoring and preserving the Maldives’ delicate coral ecosystems. Through the transplantation of healthy coral fragments, we help rehabilitate damaged reefs and encourage marine biodiversity to flourish. Each year, our coral nurseries grow and nurture more than two thousand new corals, strengthening the underwater world that sustains us all.
Sea Turtle Conservation
Did you know that sea turtles can be identified by the unique pattern of scutes on their faces, much like human fingerprints? Through our collaboration with the Olive Ridley Project and local authorities, we monitor and protect these gentle creatures, including the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtle. Each identification helps us better understand their behaviour and migration, contributing to the long-term preservation of their species in Maldivian waters.
Marine Ecosystem Protection
We actively monitor and protect our lagoon, a vital ecosystem that serves as a feeding and breeding ground for countless marine species. By preserving this delicate environment, we help ensure the continued balance and biodiversity of the ocean that surrounds our island home.
On Land
Water Conservation & Management
We are committed to protecting one of the planet’s most precious resources. By using treated water from our sewage treatment plant for irrigation, together with our reverse osmosis and ECO Pure water bottling systems, we significantly reduce freshwater consumption. These initiatives help us save approximately 5,000 cubic metres of water each year while promoting a more sustainable approach to island living.
Energy-Saving Programs
Our dedication to reducing energy use is reflected in every aspect of the resort. Solar panels with a capacity of 900 kWh provide renewable power, while energy-efficient LED lighting and optimised air-conditioning settings help minimise overall consumption. Together, these initiatives bring us closer to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Zero Plastic Initiative
We have eliminated single-use plastics from our villas and guest areas, replacing them with sustainable alternatives that reduce environmental impact. In partnership with Parley Maldives, collected plastics are recycled and transformed into useful everyday items such as shoes and credit cards. Each small step brings us closer to a cleaner, plastic-free future for our island and oceans.
Biogas Digester
Our biogas digester processes up to 1,000 kilograms of food waste each day, converting it into clean energy and compost. This closed-loop system reduces carbon emissions by more than 1.7 tonnes annually while supporting a circular, waste-to-energy approach that benefits both the resort and the environment.
Sustainable Purchasing
We prioritise sustainable sourcing across all operations, using locally grown herbs and vegetables and seafood certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Palm oil has been eliminated from our kitchens and replaced with sustainable alternatives. In addition, we use paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and soy-based inks to further reduce our environmental impact.
Food Waste Reduction
Through a comprehensive monitoring program, we analyse and reduce food waste at all points of service. At team members’ restaurants, our No-Bin Day initiative is held every Monday, when all food waste bins are removed to encourage team members to finish the food on their plates.
Chef’s Garden
Our chef’s garden supplies the kitchen with fresh herbs and seasonal fruits grown on the island. By cultivating local produce, we reduce the need for imported ingredients and promote sustainable farm-to-table dining.
Green Housekeeping
We promote environmentally friendly cleaning practices throughout the resort by using eco-labelled products for housekeeping and laundry. These sustainable choices help minimise chemical use and reduce our overall environmental footprint.
Marine Biology Team
Oriana Migliaccio – Marine Biologist
Originally from Naples, Italy, Oriana Migliaccio joined the resort in 2023, bringing extensive expertise in marine conservation. A PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer with a PhD in Life and Biomolecular Sciences, she leads biodiversity monitoring and guest education initiatives. Oriana conducts guided snorkelling sessions, coral planting experiences and informative talks that inspire awareness and appreciation of the Maldives’ marine ecosystem.
Elias Mohamad – Marine Educator
Originally from Malaysia, Elias turned his early fear of water into a lifelong passion for the ocean. After earning a bachelor’s degree in marine science, he now shares his knowledge and enthusiasm as a marine educator. Guiding guests through colourful coral reefs, Elias encourages meaningful connections with the marine world and promotes awareness of ocean conservation.
Make an Impact Together
Coral Planting
Join our coral reef restoration project and create your own coral garden under the guidance of our Marine Biologist. Guests can receive regular growth updates or return to the resort to see how their corals have flourished, contributing directly to the protection and regeneration of Maldivian reefs.
Marine Talk
Join our resident marine biology team for an engaging discussion about the underwater world. Learn about our conservation initiatives, discover fascinating facts about marine life, and gain a deeper understanding of the delicate balance that sustains the Maldivian ecosystem.
Gulhifushi Bioquest
Embark on a guided snorkelling adventure around the house reef at Gulhifushi, our private picnic and snorkelling island. Discover the beauty of the underwater world while learning about local marine life and the importance of protecting these fragile ecosystems.
Workshop
Join a hands-on workshop that gives new life to ghost nets retrieved during sea turtle rescue operations. In collaboration with local communities, transform these reclaimed materials into handcrafted bracelets, turning discarded debris into meaningful keepsakes that celebrate creativity and ocean conservation.
Nature Walk
Embark on a guided nature walk with Ibrahim, our Chief Gardener, and uncover the natural beauty of the island. Learn about native flora, their cultural significance, and traditional uses in Maldivian life, while deepening your connection to the environment through an enriching journey of discovery.
